Hammer and Hand
Metal Collective

Bruce Pringle is the proprietor of “Hammer and Hand”, in Tasmania’s Salamanca Arts Centre. The shop is named after the 16th Century Blacksmith’s Guild’s motto “By Hammer and Hand All arts do stand,” for it was the blacksmith who made the knives of the woodworker, the hammers, points, feathers and wedges of the stone mason.
“Hammer and Hand” is a metal workers’ collective, and up to eight people make use of the tiny workshop and retail outlet. The practice of having workshop and retail shop together is common in the jewellery trade. The strength of the shop is the diversity of work. With a small gas forge, they do casting and fabrication in all metals and materials.
The members of the collective are all metal-smiths engaging in small works. The shop takes on young jewellers or metal workers and provides them with space to practice and sell their art.
